How to clean a mattress

Mattresses just like all household items require a frequent and impeccable cleaning routine. So if you haven’t clean your mattress in a while here is how you should do it.

Regular cleaning

Once a week strip your mattress from the bedding and vacuum it thoroughly. By doing so you will prevent the formation of stains and you will keep the dirt, dust and harmful particles that are trapped in the surface of your mattress to a minimum. You can also wash your mattress at least once a month by using an upholstery cleaning product with enzymes. This way you will kill all dust mites that have found a safe haven on your mattress.

Stain removing

You can remove almost all types of stains with a citrus based cleanser. Just spray the stained area of your mattress with the cleanser and allow it to sit for about five minutes. Afterwards start blotting the treating area by using a clean, absorbent cloth. Don’t rub because you will push the stains further into your mattress. Once the stains are removes allow your mattress to dry before you cover it with a new set of bedding.

Removing blood stains

Blood stains tend to quite resilient and are hard to remove with a citrus based cleanser. So instead use hydrogen peroxide. Simply apply it on the stained areas of your mattress and commence blotting while the peroxide is bubbling. This won’t remove the stains entirely but it will loosen them drastically and make them easier to remove afterwards. End the stain removing by rinsing the treat areas with cold water. If the hydrogen peroxide doesn’t do the job create your homemade blood stain remover by mixing one part of baking soda with two part of cold water in a large bowl. If you don’t have baking soda under hand you can substitute it with liquid dish washing detergents but know that the cleaning solution won’t be as strong. Once you have created the stain remover apply it on the stains with the aid of clean cloth and allow it to sit for about half an hour. Then soak a cloth in cold water and use it to rinse the treated area. Once the stains are gone allow your mattress to dry. You can speed up the drying process by creating an air current by opening the door and windows of the room.

This way you will have the peace of mind that you are sleeping on a crystal clean mattress which has been cleaned by a team of professional cleaners.
